There is this negative conception among people that philosophy of education is only interested in aimless analysis and criticism that fail to offer anything concrete to either the teacher or the learner. This shallow view of philosophy of education is born out of total nihilism, absolute naivety and ignorance.
The teaching of philosophy of education encourages the learners to inculcate a high level of ability in philosophical enquiry related to educational issues. In addition, it helps students to familiarize themselves with philosophical factors that influence theories, practices and methods of education. Furthermore, philosophy of education encourages students to be open minded, that is, not to imprison the self within the sphere of already known facts
Also, philosophy of education aids in the comprehension of relevant philosophical concepts, which provide them with defensible theories for facing educational problems in particular and life problems in their multi-dimensional perspectives. Finally, philosophy of education creates a skeptical attitude in the students on whatever is presented as a statement of fact or proposition, and to see disagreements as tolerable rather than what should be discouraged. We can go on and on.
NEED FOR PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION TO THE STUDENT-TEACHEREducation is always confronted with the problems of explaining the nature of man, the society, and the world at large whether in arts, social sciences, biological sciences
In conclusion, philosophy of education gives the teacher a sense of responsibility and stronger commitment to work. In our social context, it gives an incisive and critical insight into Nigeria’s educational issues and problems as well as enhances the teacher’s ability to influence educational policies.
